LEARN TO FINISH

Practice chess endgames against Stockfish

Play the ending through to checkmate. Use hints, take back a move, and try another plan.

King and queen

Use your king and queen together to deliver checkmate. Leave the defending king a legal move until you are ready to mate.

You play White. The engine loads when you start. No account, clock, or rating required.

Choose what to practice

The library contains 30 positions, with topic and difficulty filters inside the trainer. Levels describe the learning task, not an Elo rating.

How the trainer works

  1. Choose a topic, then start a position. Click a white piece and one of its legal destinations.
  2. Stockfish replies for Black. Think about the opponent’s remaining squares before moving again.
  3. Use a clue or takeback when stuck. A draw is an opportunity to check what went wrong.
  4. Finish with checkmate. Review recorded moves in your history or download PGN.

The daily selection rotates at midnight in America/New_York, including daylight saving changes. It is chosen from this library, not a newly generated position every day.

Guest records stay on this device. Sign in to merge and sync learning records. Replays are available in endgame history.

Avoid the stalemate trap

A king with no legal move is only checkmated if it is also in check. Study the queen and king checkmate examples, or revisit the basic rules.

For a position from a finished game, use game review and save a moment to practice your own mistakes.
